VFMA Organization
Download our latest application form and become a VFMA member. History and Organization The Virginia Floodplain Management Association (VFMA) was created to serve the floodplain management community. In the 1994, VFMA held their first conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. Similar annual gatherings have been held since then as part of the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Conference. VFMA has published a semi-annual newsletter, Virginia Currents, that is distributed free of charge to every municipal government in the state participating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Regional workshops have been well attended by 50+ individuals on each occasion. VFMA focuses training efforts by spliting Virginia into 4 regions: Northern, Eastern, Central, and Mountain. Each region has unique floodplain issues. The Northern Region, primarily draining to the Potomac River, has some of the highest population cities and counties in Virginia. The Central Region, draining the Piedmont of Virginia, has moderate slopes with a mixture of landuses going through small towns and cities like Richmond and Danville. The Eastern Region, draining the lower Chesapeake Bay and directly to the Atlantic Ocean, are those areas impacted by coastal floodplain issues such as storm surge and with greatest numbers of flood insurance policies in Virginia. Finally, The Mountain Region, draining to the west of the Blue Ridge, have the most extreme slopes and flash flood issues.
The bylaws of the organization will be located in our library.
